Timeless Classic:
Little Black Dress, Jeans, Crisp White Blouse
Little black dressIn 1926 Coco Chanel has changed the history of the fashion with the introduction of the ‘little black dress’ made of silk with a long string of fake pearls. Its appearance was preceded by a long way of the fashion idea. In the beginning of the 20th century the couturier Paul Puare offered to refuse the corset. Then, for the coquetry reasons and bicycle riding women were proposed to bare their legs a little bit. The First World War and economic bounce made women to have a more active lifestyle, which was complicated by the presence of long skirts in their wardrobe. The outfits required less and less fabric, but the cut became the object of scrupulous and critical attitude. So the grounds for the little black dress were ready. Women’s pants, vests, denim and knitted wear existed already and Coco Chanel proposed a simple and elegant style, which became her trademark. It was the little black dress that became the acme of Chanel’s philosophy and the symbol of a new chic. What did it look like? It was very simple: without a collar, buttons, laces, folds, frills or any fringe. The length of it was a special point. It’s an exceptional skill not to go the limit and Coco Chanel was perfect in it. She told that many couturiers knew what a top of a dress should look like, but it was she who knew what a skirt of it should be like. She considered knees the least beautiful part of a woman’s body so her dresses hided them. A lot of designers, and later on Coco Chanel herself, made experiments with the neckline, sleeves and skirt length, with other details. It turned out that any deviation from the original (a shortened skirt or low-cut one, buttons, frills, collar or cuffs) deprived the dress of its distinctness. The black color of a dress was not accidental, too. Chanel had lost her love. But everything that she created became fashionable at once. It is amazing that women agreed to wear rather impersonal color. Maybe it happened because of the slenderizing effect of black. It turned out, that the little black dress had ‘layers’. It was so ordinary that the beauty of a woman’s body came to the front. The dress did not distract attention from its owner. It was the postulate of a new philosophy. The phrase ‘dress up’ itself had become allergic. It seemed that the dress had brought democracy into the fashion. Any woman could afford such an outfit. With the help of jewelry and several accessories you could change the style, wearing one and the same little black dress. Time destroyed the myth that the little black dress suits any woman. A regular figure is a must-have for it: a streamlined dress shows off all the imperfections. A knee-length is also quite dangerous and legs should be perfect. JeansJeans appeared in the middle of the 19th century as the cowboys and diggers work wear. Hardwearing and comfortable jeans conquered the whole world and became a part of the high fashion by now. Today, denim clothes are famous and beloved worldwide, preferred by men and women, children and elderly people, tramps and millionaires. Jeans fashion has known its ups and downs, but it still enjoys the popularity. The history of jeans originates in the town of Nim (France), where sailcloth was produced. Actually, the word ‘denim’ means ‘from Nim’. The United States is recognized to be the country of denim adoption. In 1853 a German descendant Levi Strauss decided to offer cowboys and diggers the traditional for his country cut of the pants. New pants with their patch pockets and double stitches reminded of traditional cowboy pants except they were made from blue sailcloth (in the days of Levi Strauss sailcloth was used to make tents). The new fabric was durable and resistant, which made it much more hardwearing than leather. It had made a conquest of farmers and workers. So jeans hadn’t been changed till 1926, when buttons were substituted for zipper. In 1937 labels were removed from the pockets in order not to scratch expensive leather saddles. In the 1960’s the hippies influenced not only minds, but also fashion. Designers began using denim. Since then denim shirts, trenches, caps, shoes and boots enlivened modern people’s outfits. Crisp white blouse Once appeared in women’s wardrobe, a crisp white blouse is never out of fashion like the little black dress and jeans. A crisp white blouse could be businesslike and luxurious, casual and elegant. It is certain to make you look fresh. A crisp white blouse is fabulous being paired with any kind of pants or with a very feminine skirt. A crisp white blouse is a dark horse. It doesn’t have significant history but in some way it made itself indispensable to us. Elena Zharina |
