Malachite
Malachite, which its bands of dark and bright green, is most attractive ornamental material which takes quite a good polish in spite of its low hardness of 4. Being quite opaque, its made into beads, eardrops, pendants, and a great variety of objets d'art, sometimes of large size. It is a copper carbonate, an important copper ore, and occurs in vast deposits in Siberia and the Shaba (Katanga) district of Zaire (Congo), but well-colored and patterned pieces are not very common. Sometimes it occurs mixed with azurite a closely related blue mineral. Magnificent urns, bowls and other examples of the stone carver's art are in the Vatican and Russian collections.
